About this task
A historic 1970s community mural on César Chávez Ave has suffered significant fading and graffiti damage. We're restoring it panel by panel with the original artist's blessing and reference photographs.
This mural has been a landmark of Boyle Heights for over 50 years. Restoring it is an act of neighbourhood memory. Each panel you complete is a piece of history made visible again.
How to complete
- Meet the lead artist coordinator at the corner of César Chávez & Soto at 8 AM.
- Attend the colour-matching briefing — do not begin painting without this.
- You will be assigned a panel section and given the correct paint palette.
- Apply base coat where indicated, allow 45 minutes to dry, then apply detail layer using the reference print provided.
- Do not improvise or add any elements not in the reference.
- Photograph your completed panel against the reference image before packing up.
- Clean all brushes and return equipment to the supply table.
What to bring
- Old clothes or a painting apron
- Lunch and plenty of water
- A steady hand
How to submit
Once you've completed this task, email your submission to [email protected] . Email your before/after panel photos along with your assigned panel number. Both photos required for submission to be accepted.
Notes
Some painting experience is helpful but not required. This is a multi-week project — returning volunteers are especially valued for colour consistency.
